Summer in the Hills!

Summer in the Hills is a unique vacation experience for nature lovers, recreation seekers, and those in search of enjoyable culinary experiences.  Over 1800 alpine huts are dotted throughout SalzburgerLand, more than in any other Austrian province. Around 550 huts open their doors to hikers, treating you to hearty traditional dishes from alpine world.

ATOMIC Vital-Park Altenmarkt-Zauchensee

A place where your dreams come true, twice over!  The magical countryside is certain to move you, both down in the valley around Altenmarkt, and high up in the mountains of Zauchensee.

At the ATOMIC Vital-Park, two richly contrasting hiking areas lie close together.  The delightful village of  Altenmarkt (842 m) nestled amid a broad, open valley bottom, interspersed by fascinating forested ridges and peaks that offer simple hikes, all the while surrounded by truly impressive alpine scenery, and the mountain village of Zauchensee (1,350 m), in the midst of alpine scenery seemingly plucked from the pages of a picture book.

Both of these hiking areas generally offer intermediate hiking routes at all elevations and full of contrasts: comfortable and leisurely from Altenmarkt, and more adventuresome from Zauchensee. A total of 33 hiking routes extending over 200 km, through the countryside surrounding the Lacken- and Strimskogel, and at elevations ranging from 842 to 2,344 m above sea level - this is the foundation of the one-of-a-kind ATOMIC Vital-Park.

Hiking Tips

Hike on the Schwemmberg via the "Country Lore Path"
From Altenmarkt (856 m) along the banks of the Enns to the and via the Schwemmbergweg past the Seetal and Pötzelbergbauer farms to the Moosalm (ca. 1,200 m), continuing along a forest trail to the Reitlehenalm (1,280 m) and Buchsteinalm, then to the Habersattgut (1,120 m), along the Schwemmbergweg and back to Altenmarkt, an easy hike taking about 3 hours.

•	   Country Lore Path

Steinwand Loop
Via the Zauchenseestrasse (856 m) to the Wetterkreuz, then along the Rettenbachweg uphill to the Pailgut, make a right onto the Bifangweg and continue up to the Hochnössler (ca. 1,300 m).  Follow the Steinwandrundweg, making a right at the Eisenhofalm intersection, now down the Steinwandrundweg as far as the new Zauchenseestrasse, making a right and following this road for about 100 m, then make a left onto the old road, heading in the direction of Altenmarkt as far as Gasthof Neuhäusl. Following the Mühlenweg, we will reach the Schattauergasse and take this back to the center of Altenmarkt.  5 hours total walking time.

Winterbauer Loop
From the town center of Altenmarkt (856 m) along the Schlatterbergweg, past the playground to the "Safe-Haus", where we will make a left through the forest to the Winterbauer mountain inn  (ca. 1,100 m), continuing via the Seidlgut and Deml to the Flachau intersection. Making a left on the Schoberweg, we return along the Zauchenseestraße back to the center of town. Easy hike taking about 2.5 hours.

Eckwaldsteig
Along the Zauchenseestrasse to the Wetterkeuz, making a left at the cross, ca. 200 meters along the Schattauergasse, then make a right onto the Eckwaldweg, continuing uphill as far as Appartementhaus Schober.  Across from this house to the right is the Eckwaldsteig, which we follow uphill past the riding stables, then return back down to the Eckwaldweg. We now stay on this path back to town. About a 3-hour walk.
